Telephone
The telephone is a device used to communicate between two people by
Voice using sound waves going through a wire or the air. The first telephone was
Made in 1876 by Alexander Graham Bell in Canada. From his small experiment
until today the telephone has become something completely different. There are
now so many different classifications of telephones from the home and office
Systems to cell phones those are now so popular and common. Phones today do
not just let people talk to each other. People can take pictures, check their emails,
Text messages their friends, and keep records of all the calls they send or receive.
All of this is in a device that fits into your pocket.
Evolution
In the book, Biology, Campbell and Reece wrote about the ideas of Charles Darwin. Darwin wrote a book, The Origin of the Species about evolution. Darwin’s theory is that animals and plants have evolved over time.
Charles Darwin was educated at Cambridge University in England and there he studied religion and biology. After he finished his studies, he went on a trip to the Pacific Ocean on the ship named The Beagle. On this trip he was collecting information about unusual animals and plants that he found. His studying of these plants and animals made him think about the idea of evolution and natural selection.
One of the most important ideas that Darwin wrote about is the idea of adaptation. This means that animals adapt or change when they move from one place to another. The example that Darwin showed was with the birds called finches. In the islands of the Galapogos, Darwin found different kinds of finches. These birds were different in different islands. They had adapted to the kind of food that was there for them on the different islands.
In his ideas of descent, Darwin wrote about two kinds of changes. There is one kind that is natural and another that is artificial. Natural selection is simple. The weak die and the strong live. This is true for both plants and animals. When conditions are hard, only the strongest plants or the strongest animals can live. This is natural. The three most important facts about natural selection are that it occurs between animals and the environment they live in, it involves only conditions that are passed from animals to their children, and the environment plays a big part in its effects. Artificial selection is the kind of thing that people do to make plants or animals better or stronger. Farmers try to make their plants grow faster and produce more fruit or vegetables so they can make more money. They also try to make cows give more milk or produce meat with less fat. All of this is done artificially by science.
The most important idea that Darwin wrote about was that over long periods of time things change or evolve. Nothing stays the same. The animals that are alive today have evolved from other animals in the past. The plants that grow today are not exactly the same plants that grew thousands of years ago. It is important to remember that Darwin’s ideas are a theory and this means that they are not proven. This is important because there is a big conflict between the ideas of Darwin and some religious groups.
Happiness
David Myers and Michael Wiederman both write about happiness. They agree on some things but mostly they do not agree about what make people happy.
Myers says that there are two things that make people happy and those two things are relationships and faith. He argues that the two kinds of relationships that are important are friends and marriage. Friends are important to all people. People who do not have friends are not happy. Married people are happier than not married people. This is proven according to Myers. According to Myers faith is really important for happiness. Faith makes people have hope. After the life they can go to heaven. Faith also helps them in the problems of the life because they can pray to God and they think that God is listening to them and helping them.
Wiederman says that the things that make people happy are personality, achievement and flow. Personality is something inherited. This means that if parents are depressed they will have depressed children. People have a based line of happiness. This means that everyone has a level of happiness that does not change. A happy person will be sad when someone he loved died but after he will go back to the kind of happy person he is. A depressed person will always be depressed. Maybe if he wins the lottery he will be happy a bit but soon after he will be depressed again. These are personality things that he talks about. Wiederman really believes that happiness comes from achievement. If people have goals and try to get them they are happy. Working hard at something make them happy. The idea of flow is that the person who is happy does not think about the past or the future all he thinks about is right now. That is what makes him happy.
Myers and Wiederman agree that money does not give happiness and that genetics are important to happiness. Both of these writers say that research proves that money is not important for happiness. They say that people need the basic amounts of money. They need enough to pay their rent, buy food and clothes and keep warm. After that the amount of money has nothing to do with being happy. There are as many rich people who are unhappy as there are poor people who are unhappy. Also the rich people and the poor people are equal in happiness.
Myers and Wiederman have very different ideas about happiness. Myers says that the relationship and faith are important for happiness. He believes in personality, achievement and in flow.
